New details released on construction of Beckley YMCA

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) The secret is out on designs for a new state-of-the-art gym for the YMCA of Southern West Virginia.

CEO Jay Rist unveiled the details of the project Monday, which will be located next to the Paul Cline Youth Sports Memorial Complex in Beckley.

"When you look at the conceptual design, it looks like wings. And when you look at it back from the complex, it looks like an eagle ready to take off."

On the left side of 30 million project is an aquatics center, which includes a couple water slides, lazy river, competition pool, play pool, diving pool, and a rock climbing wall that lands in the water.

On the right side is a turf indoor soccer field, a basketball court, a volley ball court, three studios, an area for weights and exercise equipment, a walking track, and a two-level kids gym.

The proposed 120 square foot facility would more than double the size of the current YMCA gym located in Uptown Beckley.

Rist said the Y has already secured 26 million for the project through generous donations from businessman Chris Cline, the Carter Family Foundation, and government funds. If the Y can raise four million more by December, Rist said the project should take 18 months to complete and be open by the Spring of 2020.

"You will also be able to go to the Health and Wellness Center on the 2nd floor and watch your kids from above. You can be in one part of the Y while they’re in another but still see them," added Sports & Rec. Dir. Jason Logan.

As for the current YMCA gym in Uptown, the YMCA CEO said he is in talks with leaders at WVU Tech to purchase the facility as an athletic center for students.
