UPDATE: Victim identified in attack on Appalachian Trail

(WVVA) Federal authorities have released the name of the man killed in an attack on the Appalachian Trail in Wythe County, VA.

The victim, Ronald Sanchez, Jr, 43, of Oklahoma died on Saturday from injuries he received the day before. Investigators are withholding the name of the female hiker who survived the alleged attack.

According to court documents, James Jordan, 30, of West Yarmouth, MA approached four hikers. He was singing, playing the guitar, and making threats. Two hikers were able to get away.

Initial reports indicated Jordan used a machete, but authorities called it a knife in the affidavit.

Jordan was charged with murder and assault. A federal judge ordered him to a psychiatric facility for evaluation.
