Independence, Greenbrier West punch tickets to state softball tournament

On Wednesday evening, Independence faced off against Shady Spring in a Class AA Region 3 softball bout with a trip to the state tournament on the line.

After the first inning, the game was tied at three. However, the Lady Patriots were able to run away with the game, scoring nine unanswered runs to win the game 12-3 in just five innings.

This is the first time that the Independence softball team has earned a spot in the state tournament since 2009.

“It’s a great feeling. It’s great for our community and our school. Five years ago, I came here and I told everybody that my goal is to win 20 games a year, and I thought if we did that, we’d be successful. We’ve upgraded our schedule. We’ve done everything we could possibly do to make our kids better and this is what we get from it,” Independence head coach Ken Adkins said.

In Charmco, Greenbrier West defeated Valley, 5-0. All five Lady Cavalier runs came in the sixth inning. The group also made history, becoming the first West team to qualify for the state softball tournament.

The state tournament will begin Wednesday, May 22 in Vienna, WV.
