MERCER COUNTY: Groundbreaking held for new primary school

BLUEFIELD, WV (WVVA) School officials gather in Bluefield to officially mark the spot where a new primary school will be built.

The Bluefield Primary School (unofficial name) will be located at 673 West Cumberland Road, adjacent to Bluefield High School. The $12.2 million project will consolidate Memorial and Whitethorn primary schools.

“A building can add so much to educational opportunities,” says school superintendent Deborah Akers. “To have an atmosphere and environment that’s up-to-date, we can put the latest technologies in, has a lot of light, all these things influence their learning.”

Construction is to begin in the next few weeks and should be completed in time for the 2020-2021 school year. The new facility will house about 350 Pre-K through 2nd grade students
