UPDATE: Teen’s body recovered from New River Gorge River

ANOTHER UPDATE: WVVA has confirmed with Chief Ranger, R. Duane Michael the body of a 16-year-old teen that went missing in the New River Gorge River Friday morning has been recovered.

Officials are not releasing the name at this time. His body was recovered around noon this afternoon.

UPDATE: According to National Park Service (NPS) spokesperson, Julena Campbell, the 16-year-old teen was swimming with others at the McCreery boat launch around 7 a.m., when he went halfway in the river and was caught in a current.

She said the people he was with attempted to reach him, but were unsuccessful and called 911. He has not been seen since.

Campbell said the McCreery boat launch will be closed as search and rescue teams led by the NPS begin work.


TERRY, W.Va. (WVVA) A search is underway after reports of a missing swimmer in the New River Gorge National River on Friday morning.

According to Bradley-Prosperity Vol. Fire Chief Bobby Palmer, multiple crews are on scene searching the river near Terry.

He said the missing swimmer is believed to be a 16-year-old boy. Chief Palmer said the boy went in the water at a pier at 7 a.m., but has not been seen since.

He said Bradley firefighters are on scene, two Raleigh County dive teams are currently in route, and two Fayette County river teams are in route.

Chief Palmer said the National Park Service (NPS) is also responding.
