Since 1994, the West Virginia state football championships, known as the Super Six, have been held in Wheeling Island Stadium.
The Super Six South Committee hopes to change that. On Tuesday, the committee met to formalize their bid to make Bluefield the host site for the 2020 championship games.
Committee member, Marty Gearheart, feels the decision would benefit all parties involved.
“We have a tremendous amount to offer,” he said. “We have a long football history and we can offer as much to the state of West Virginia and these football championships as anybody else in the state.”
“We feel like a rotating circumstance between the north and the south is the best way for there to be parity across the state in football championship games,” he continued.
Gearheart also said that the bid will list Mitchell Stadium and Princeton’s Hunnicutt Stadium as playable venues on the bid.
