Jays take Mercer Cup Series lead with 2-1 victory

The Bluefield Blue Jays and Princeton Rays entered the evening tied three games apiece in this season’s Mercer Cup Series.

In the third inning, Princeton second baseman Brett Wisely was ejected from the game while playing in the field. Angelo Armenta would replace him for the remainder of the contest.

The Jays were held without a hit until the fourth inning, when Davis Schneider belted a solo home run over the left field wall.

Jake Guenther responded for the Rays in the sixth inning, lacing an RBI double down the third base line to tie things up, 1-1. But, in the bottom of the sixth, Steward Berroa belted the go-ahead home run to left field.

That’s how the score would stay, as Bluefield claimed the 2-1 win. The Blue Jays now have a 4-3 edge over their Mercer County rivals this season.

The two teams will meet again on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
