Bluefield forces winner-take-all game in Mercer Cup series

PRINCETON — The Blue Jays evened up the 2019 Mercer Cup series with a 7-2 win on Wednesday night.

Entering the evening, the Princeton Rays needed just one win over their rivals to claim the cup for a second-straight season.

They struck first in the third inning, as Jake Guenther roped an RBI triple to the right field fence.

Bluefield’s Spencer Horwitz erased that lead with one swing of the bat, launching his third home run of the year. The visitors took the lead in the fifth on a Justin Ammons RBI double, and never looked back.

The Jays scored four more runs in the sixth, thanks in part to a pair of home runs from PK Morris and Ryan Sloniger.

Sam Ryan earned the victory on the mound, pitching five innings, allowing just two runs on four hits.

The two clubs will play each other for the final time this season on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The winner will lay claim to the 2019 Mercer Cup.
