CEDAR BLUFF, VA (WVVA) Governor Ralph Northam and his team just finished their trip around the Commonwealth to hear what communities need to boost the workforce. During the final discussion at Southwest Virginia Community College, Governor Northam says the message is very clear.
“We need more jobs,” says Northam. He says students in county schools have proven they’re well educated, there’s just no jobs for them to go to.
Because there are no jobs in the area, many people move away for better opportunity. Many in attendance say jobs in the northern part of the Commonwealth, needs to move southwest.
“People want to stay and work and raise their families where they grew up,” says Northam. “We need to bring businesses here that can support these individuals that are well trained and want to stay in their community.”
While bringing jobs to the area controlled the discussion, other members of the audience spoke on the coal industry, broadband access, and child care.
Anyone who missed Monday’s discussion can fill out an online form to submit ideas about improving the Commonwealth’s workforce needs.
