Fundraiser being held at Winterplace Ski Resort for 11-month-old battling rare heart condition

RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. (WVVA) – Winterplace Ski Resort is hosting a fundraiser for Waylon Charles Scott, the 11-month-old and grandson of a longtime employee has a rare heart defect called: “Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.”

Baby Waylon has been in and out of the hospital since the day of his birth. Waylon has had 3 open heart surgeries. The young baby and his parents have to travel from Cool Ridge to Charleston, West Virginia and sometimes Ohio for treatments. In order to maintain his care, Winterplace Ski Resort will be holding a fundraiser featuring fall lift rides, and other activities on Saturday, October 19th.

“We have been blessed with good friends and neighbors. We’d’ like for them to come out and help support to ease some of the medical expenses and traveling expenses because they are 5 hours away from home and have been for several nights, and I think this will help ease their mind,” Waylon’s grandmother, Lisa Benbow said.

Baby Waylon may have to undergo another heart surgery or even a heart transplant before the age of two. As for now, his grandmother tells others going through a unique medical journey….

“It’s been a day to day process. We thank God every day that he gives us with him. Stay strong, and just show support to the parents, and your grandchild,” Benbow added.

Winterplace Ski Resort will also be open not only on October 19th, but every Saturday and Sunday from noon until 5pm during the month of October.
