Trial begins for Princeton couple, child neglect and murder of a child by a parent, guardian or custodian

MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. (WVVA)- The trial has started for a Princeton couple facing child neglect, after their son died inside of a hospital.

Corey Steven Moore and Christy Ann Moore are charged with child neglect resulting in death and murder of a child by a parent, guardian or custodian, after their 21-month old boy died November 8 inside of the Princeton Community Hospital.

The cause of death for the infant is believed to be malnutrition.

Opening arguments by Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney George Sitler began around 1:15 p.m.

Testimony included a nurse who said the infant was struggling to breathe inside of the hospital.

According to a previous statement by Detective-Sergeant S.A. Sommers of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department, the child was unresponsive when brought to the hospital. Medical staff tried to revive the child but were unsuccessful.

When questioning the mother and father, Sommers learned the child became ill on November 1 and had lost between 14-18 pounds during that time. The parents said their child refused to eat some days and had “altered mental status.” They also noticed his skin had lost color. But when Sommers probed the parents further about why they didn’t seek medical treatment earlier, they could not give an answer.

If found guilty by a jury, the couple could be sentenced to life without mercy. Stay with WVVA for additional updates.
