MERCER COUNTY (WVVA) — A new proposal by the MLB could potentially eliminate Minor League Baseball teams in our area — raising the eyebrows of local businesses.
Sherry Williams, owner of ‘A Piece of Cake,’ also operates the concession stand at H.P. Hunnicutt Field during the Princeton Rays’ season.
“I don’t know what we’d do if we weren’t doing P-Rays in the Summer time,” she says, “I don’t know what we did before then.”
Williams says her Summer months depend on funds raised at Rays Games.
“During baseball, we don’t book anything but baseball and cakes,” she said. “We would definitely have to find other ways to pick it up somewhere else.”
And even during the off-season, Rays fans are loyal to her business.
“They’ll come down here a lot of the time to eat or order cakes. When they need catering, they’ll call us — so it’s helped us a lot.”
And while that source of income is replaceable, her Summers at the ball field are not.
“If we’re not doing baseball, we’ll find something else,” she explained, “It won’t be as fun, it definitely won’t be a first choice. [Because] we really enjoy it. If we did everything for the money, we wouldn’t do it at all.”
