MERCER COUNTY, W.Va.(WVVA)- January 2020 has been officially dedicated as 'General Hugh Mercer Month.'
The commissioners created a proclamation to honor General Mercer, presenting it to the Hugh Mercer Chapter of the sons of the American Revolution.
Mercer became a general during the American Revolutionary War and was fatally wounded during the Battle of Princeton, New Jersey in 1777. Mercer County was named in his honor and some want to ensure no one forgets it.
"I want [the community] to honor our history because it's being forgotten, unwritten and not taught as it should be," said Kevin Pruitt, the sons of the American Revolution.
The proclamation states 'The sons of the American Revolution is a leading male lineage society in the United States.'
