Bluefield Police credit K-9 units for keeping city safer

BLUEFIELD, W.Va.(WVVA)- The Bluefield Police Department conducted a K-9 demonstration during the Board of Director's meeting, showing how the K-9's presence has impacted the department's results over a 4-year period.

Sergeant Copenhaver credits the K-9's for helping to make the city safer for all families, by supporting police in apprehending individuals involved with illegal activities.

"We've been able to confiscate over $500,000 worth of drugs, paraphernalia and illegal firearms that were out here in the community," said Copenhaver. "We've been able to get rid of them [because of the K-9 help].

The demonstration included locating narcotics and handler protection.

Last year, the National Council for Home Safety and Security ranked Bluefield the third safest city in the state.
