Beckley attorney to run for city council

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) A Beckley attorney is throwing his hat in the ring for Beckley's Common Council.

Lawyer and businessman Robert Dunlap has announced he will be taking on incumbent Frank Williams for Ward 3.

Dunlap has served on the city's Human Rights Commission and Historic Landmark Commission. His priorities include addressing dilapidated buildings and making the city more attractive to new business.

"I'm just a dad, a dad with a 10-year-old that's tired of not being able to let my kid go out and play at night. When he comes of age, he might not be able to get a job outside the mines...we need to offer more than that. We need more industry, commerce, and we need to take care of the abandoned buildings where people are breaking in and overdosing."

Dunlap was instrumental in saving the historic Beckley Newspapers Building from demolition. After purchasing the structure in 2018, he turned the building into a housing complex that is also home to two different branches of Americorps.
