Multi-million dollar hotel going up in Beckley

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) It's the small stretch of Raleigh County that always seems to defy the economic downturns that have plagued the rest of the region. When coal mines close and department stores shutter, Harper Road businesses always seem to grow.

But now, the area has landed a big name in luxury; a new multi-million dollar Hilton hotel, according to Raleigh County Commission Pres. Dave Tolliver.

The new hotel is technically outside the City of Beckley. Through the Hotel-Motel Tax, the county will receive six percent of every room sold.

"The construction of the new Hilton will bring a taste of luxury to the area, especially with the Hilton name alone," said Beckley Councilman-at-Large Tim Berry.

Berry said one of the key draws to growth along Harper Road in the past has been its location -- at the intersection of Interstate-77.

But it is not just the county that stands to benefit. More people staying over will likely mean more business for other Harper Road institutions such as the Chocolate Moose.

"Exit 44 is hopping all the time. But I regularly hear from people they were lucky to get a room in the area because it's so busy," said owner Kevin Traube.

For many traveling through, Traube said Harper Road is a first look at the city.

"It's really valuable for us to have enough rooms for people to stay. And it's not unusual for us to hear people say they've decided to extend their stay because the people are so nice and the place is so beautiful."

A spokesperson for Hilton was not immediately available for comment as to when the project will be finished.

WVVA News has also learned that Campestre Mexican Restaurant will be moving into bigger digs on Harper Road. The restaurant will be moving into the former Hooter's location off of the exit, but an opening date has not been set.
