Area wrestlers muscle into state championship round

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WVVA) - After a full Friday of wrestling, a handful of wrestlers from southern West Virginia will compete for state titles on Saturday.

In Class AAA, Woodrow Wilson's Devaw Gauldin defeated Ripley's Austin Boggess by a 4-3 decision. Gauldin will compete for the 195 lb. championship on Saturday evening.

In Class A-AA, six local grapplers found a way into the semifinals -- three advanced all the way to the title match.

Marshall Clere of Greenbrier West won a 6-2 decision over Fairmont Senior's Marko Tarley to secure a spot in the 113 lb. championship. The Cavaliers' Noah Brown is also into the 220 lb. championship match after pinning Point Pleasant's Wyatt Stanley in the semis.

The lone Independence Patriot into the gold medal match is freshman Judah Price (120 lb.). He defeated Oak Glen's Caleb Lamb in the semifinals by a 9-5 decision.

In the team standings, Woodrow Wilson sits 13th in Class AAA with 45.0 points. Greenbrier East is 18th with 31.0 points and Princeton is 22nd with 16.0 points.

Greenbrier West is the high-standing area team in 5th with 68.0 points. Independence is currently 6th with 61.5 points.

Wrestling continues Saturday with consolation matches at 10:30 a.m. Championship matches begin at 6 p.m.
