I-64 Westbound lanes reopened after fugitive jumped out of police vehicle

The following is a press release from the Lewisburg Police Department:

At approximately 5:53 pm on 2/28/20, 2 fugitives from justice were being transported to the Southern Regional Jail by officers from the Lewisburg Police Department and Greenbrier County Sheriff's Department in a caged police vehicle. during the transport, one of the prisoners was able to exit the moving vehicle out of a rear window. this occurred at approximately the 159.5 mile marker on I-64 Westbound. Both prisoners were handcuffed behind their back, shackled, and were wearing seat belts prior to the attempted escape. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained during the attempted escape, and the extent of his injuries are unknown at this time. The second prisoner was transported on to Southern Regional Jail without incident. I-64 Westbound was closed and remained closed until the investigation was completed. Additional information will be released at a future date, due to an ongoing investigation. I-64 Westbound lanes were reopened at approximately 9:00 pm.
