MERCER COUNTY (WVVA) -- Kayli Mann of Pikeview High School is known for her academic excellence.
"She has a passion for learning; she digs in to every subject that you offer her, and she takes every AP/Honors course available," said Amber Lilly, Pikeview High School Principal. "She just really wants to learn - she wants to be the best student she can possibly be, and achieve all that she can."
That excellence has been recognized at a national level, as Mann was named 1 of 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars in the country -- one of the nation's highest honors to graduating seniors.
It's an achievement she says felt impossible.
"It is absolutely insane that I got it," Mann said. "I guess when I was growing up, I didn't think that southern West Virginia could succeed on a national scale. And then to prove my younger self wrong, that I really could succeed - and people from this area can do these kinds of things - is really awesome."
However, it's an achievement well-deserved.
"She has always strived to do the best she can, and she wants to represent West Virginia," Lilly said. "So I think that means as much to her as anything else."
"I really wanted to push myself to be the best I could be," Mann added. "I really tried to take the best classes that I could, and really make sure that my essays stood out; and that all those aspects of me worked together to get me where I am."
After graduation, Mann plans to attend the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where she will concentrate in Marketing and Communications as a Wharton Scholar.
