GILES CO., Va. (WVVA) - Friday May 25th, we showed you a mudslide, which intially shut down the left lane of Highway 460 Westbound between Rich Creek and Narrows.
See our previous coverage here.
During the weekend, the mudslide led to damages to a retaining wall. With the retaining wall continuing to shift, the Virginia Department of Transportation has decided to deem both Highway 460 Westbound and Eastbound between Rich Creek and Narrows "unstable". Which has led to road closures on all four lanes eastbound and westbound.
Following the closing, the Giles County Sheriffs Office has shared alternative routes for those affected by the incident.
The BEST ALTERNATE ROUTE includes taking I-77 to Rocky Gap, leading you to Wolf Creek Road. This has been deemed the best and saftest alternative route. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED FOR TRUCKERS.
Other alternative routes include taking Lurich Road off of 460 to get around the closures, taking you back on to 460. THIS ROUTE IS NOT ALLOWED FOR TRUCKS OR VEHICLES OVER 20 FEET because there is a one lane tunnel.
Motorists can also take I-77 to I-81 and then come through Dublin to hit Route 100 to get around the road closures on 460.
The Virginia Department of Transportation tells WVVA the repairs to route 460 could take up to two months, with a possibility of opening one lane a little earlier. There is no firm date as to when repairs to the road will be completed.
Stay with WVVA for the lastest updates.
