Lewisburg, W.Va. (WVVA) - Primary elections will be decided Tuesday. Among them is the race for Greenbrier County Commission. One seat lasting for a term of six-years will be on the ballot.
One issue at hand is the Greenbrier Valley Airport. The county commission appoints airport board members.
Past investigations over revenue and recent FAA complaints filed by a fired former employee have led to a less than stellar image for the small airport.
Greenbrier County Commission President Lowell Rose is on Tuesday's ballot in the Republican primary. Rose said of the FAA complaints, "It's costing the airport tens of thousand of dollars and giving them a black eye when they don't deserve one." Commissioner Rose said the airport is now under new management and has a totally new board. He said the airport is on the way up and its image will soon follow.
But Republican challenger Girlonza ‘G’ Scott said if he were elected to Greenbrier County Commission he would consider voting to add back controversial former airport authority board member and Greenbrier County Commissioner Mike McClung. McClung is currently banned from the airport as he awaits a hearing regarding three misdemeanor charges for removing airport documents. "I believe it’s article 140, a commissioner if he is seeing any wrongdoings it is his job to investigate it," said Scott. Scott said he thought the airport was doing better than ever under McClung's leadership.
Ultimately any airport wrongdoing should be sorted out by the FAA and a special prosecutor assigned to look into the airport. So far, two investigations—one by the FBI and one by the state did not turn up any charges, according to Commissioner Rose.
Don Withrow is the only candidate running in the Democratic primary in the Greenbrier County Commission race. "I really think in time it will resolve itself. The truth will come out," said Withrow.
