Animal abuse, neglect, and dog fighting are ongoing issues in McDowell County.

Representatives from the Mercer County Humane Society and the ALIVE Animal Service Group are trying to raise awareness on dog fighting. Both groups are passing out flyers throughout Mercer and McDowell Counties to encourage people to speak up on the issue.

"Back on May 16th there was an arrest made of a Steven Brown and Richard Nemore and the Mercer County Humane Society took three of those dogs and they were in very bad shape. Not only have they been fought, but they were neglected and malnourished. They were in great need of vet care and we took care of those dogs and we just want make people aware that this does go on. It's not right how anyone can get an enjoyment out of watching those dogs fight each other to the death is just beyond me and something needs to be done."

Kim Bay, President of the Mercer County Humane Society

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $5,00 reward for anyone who reports dog fighting. To report this crime, call: 1-877-TIP-HSUS.
