Former record-breaking coach now winning the hearts of shelter pets

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) For decades, he set the bar for Woodrow Wilson High School Basketball -- winning five state championships and a record 300+ games. But today, Coach Barksdale spends his free time winning the hearts of some of the lonely pets at the Raleigh County Animal Shelter.

Everyday on his lunch break, he comes out to walk Sierra -- a dog that has seen its share of trouble in life.

But just like he does on the basketball court, Barksdale helps her get up and get in the game.

"As you can see, we have a good time. She's fine around me, but whatever happened when she was younger makes her sad. I'm glad I can walk her and I think I get more enjoyment out of it than she does maybe," said Barksdale.

For those who cannot adopt, Barksdale and the shelter's staff say volunteering to walk the dogs is a great way to help animals at the shelter. There are also walking tracks out back.

The shelter is open for walks, donations, and adoptions Tuesday-Saturday from 11 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
