BECKLEY, W. VA. (WVVA) - The VA hospital in Beckley recently dedicated their fitness center to a long time employee.
Sheryl K. Richardson served as the employee wellness coordinator at the Beckley V-A for years before she passed away in 2016.
One of her main goals was to expand the employee fitness center.
When Amanda Miller, the current health coordinator, took over for Richardson, she was determined to make it happen.
"I knew that one of her major goals was to put this facility in a better location for the employees and I wanted to honor that and fulfill that goal," said Miller.
One the fitness center was remodeled, it was an easy decision to dedicate it in Richardson's memory.
"I knew that when we got it moved one of my first goals was to see if I could dedicate it in her memory and as soon as I asked there was no question," said Miller. "It was an automatic yes from the administration."
Richardson's son JT is a veteran who now works at the same V-A hospital as his mother. He said it is touching that the hospital honored his late mother in that way.
"It means a lot," said Richardson. "What means more is the dedication that Amanda and the rest of the staff put into it just to help her realize her dream."
The fitness center serves as a constant reminder of his mother, who's footsteps he follows in every day.
The new fitness center opened to employees of the V-A in March, and was dedicated to Richardson last week.
Hospital officials say having a fitness center for employees is important so they themselves can stay mentally and physically healthy and take better care of their patients.
