(WVVA) - Teams at the high school level may not have to wait until March 1 to return to action, Governor Jim Justice announced on his Monday press briefing.
Schools may now begin winter sports practices as early as February 14, with the first games being allowed on March 3 -- if the school's county is not in red or remote learning. Teams must complete a minimum of 14 practices before playing games or competing in any competitions.
"This gives us 16 days that we can practice and get our 14 practices in," Governor Justice said.
The announcement comes just days after the governor assured protesters delaying winter sports until March 1 was "the right thing."
Students in Kindergarten through eighth grade are scheduled to return to in-person instruction, regardless of the county's color, on Tuesday, January 19.
Students in ninth through twelfth grade will not return to in-person instruction on the 19th if the school's county is in the red.
