BECKLEY W. VA. (WVVA) - A local Girl Scout troop is helping homeless veterans as part of the winter giving challenge.
Troop number 10137 donated items that will help a previously homeless veterans establish a new home.
The troop leader said they were inspired to give back to the veterans because many members of the troop have family members who served.
Sara Yoke, the Public Affairs officer with the Beckley VA Medical Center, said they're appreciative of the donations to help meet veterans' needs.
"We rely on our community partners, non-profits, churches, [and] other government agencies to come together to help us fill in gaps where there's need," said Yoke. "Whether it be hygiene products, or you know things for a house, or food, we come together as a community to fill needs and the need is there."
Troop leaders said it took the girls about two weeks to gather all the items.
The troop then challenged another troop to participate in the winter giving challenge by serving another non-profit or charity organization in the community.
