Lawmaker pushing for increase to Homestead exemption

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVVA) Lawmakers in Charleston are working on a bill to make life a little easier for those 65 and older.

A bill under consideration in the House of Delegates would increase the Homestead exemption from $20,000 to $40,000 dollars on assessed property value.

According to one of the sponsors of the bill, Del. Austin Hayes, (R) 32nd Dist., the bill would only apply to those 65 and older.

"We have lots of seniors who have contributed to society over the years. A lot of those who are 65 and older are on a fixed income and I think we need to do whatever we can to help them and give back to them."

The legislation has yet to be placed on the House calendar. It must first be considered by the Finance Committee before moving to the Judiciary Committee for further consideration.

Del. Haynes said similar legislation is also under consideration in the Senate.
