Local veteran chosen for 5,000th COVID-19 vaccine dose

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) - The Beckley VA Medical Center distributed its 5,000th vaccine dose Monday.

The recipient was marine veteran Terri Eanes.

The VA's program director shared why Eanes was selected to commemorate this milestone.

"Well it's interesting because she's an engaged and involved veteran as it is so it's our privilege," said program director Desmond McMullan.

March is Women's History Month and the Beckley VA Medical Center uplifts and recognizes its female veterans.

Eanes is one of the thousands of veterans who've been vaccinated there.

"It's just one more chance to put another chink in the wall to prove that we're here," said Eanes.

She shared her initial feelings after receiving the dose.

"Proud because I can serve I can do something to give back," said Eanes.

For her, selecting a specific vaccine was not a main factor.

"The sooner you get the shot, the sooner you're vaccinated, the sooner we can get back to a semblance of normality," said the marine veteran.

Eanes said she encourages people to look past fear.

"You have to stand and face it. So, with the shot, I went in there, faced it.. no problems," said Eanes.
