ATHENS, W.Va. (WVVA) - The Mountain Lions fought tooth and nail to see the quarterfinal round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament, defeating Davis & Elkins, 107-100 in double overtime on Monday.
Three Mountain Lions finished with at least 20 points on the evening.
Senior Malik Johnson poured in a career-high 29 points, six rebounds and seven assists. The performance put Johnson in rare company, as he became just the 40th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
Sophomore Ethan Heller finished with 28 points, six rebounds and six assists. Liam Evans also chipped in 21 points and eight rebounds.
"I try to put these guys in situations when we get here in August with our conditioning that they have to empty their tank on a daily basis and refill it and be ready to go again the next day," head coach Todd May said after the game. "These guys respond every single time we ask them to do that. Obviously works out here when you get to March. You know, we didn't want to stop playing."
Davis & Elkins' Gyasi Powell led all scorers with 30 points on the night.
The Mountain Lions will draw West Liberty in the quarterfinals. Tip-off from WesBanco Arena in Wheeling comes at 2 p.m. on Friday.
