ATHENS, W.Va. (WVVA) - All athletic practices and events at Concord University will be postponed for at least a week, as the number of COVID-19 cases among student-athletes has risen, the university said in a Monday statement.
According to a release, 21 positive COVID-19 cases have been recorded with 170 additional student-athletes in quarantine due to contact tracing.
Some of the student-athletes recently attended a large gathering , which violated safety protocols, the statement explains. Students who did break protocol have been disciplined.
"I am incredibly disappointed in the few student athletes who violated the rules," Athletic Director Kevin Garrett said. "Because of their actions, their teammates and others are now in quarantine and are not permitted to practice or play. The majority of the athletes negatively impacted by this had nothing to do with the safety violations."
Concord was scheduled to open its shortened football season on Thursday against Charleston. That game has been postponed. No make-up date has yet been announced.
According to the release, all student-athletes will be tested again on Thursday and Friday before a decision to return to practice and competition is made.
