The White Water Commission has proposed changes to rules for a four mile stretch of the New River that runs from Sandstone Falls to Meadow Creek. The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources is taking public comments on the proposed rule changes.
Lieutenant Dennis Feazell works in law enforcement for the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources described the effects of the rule changes saying, "Basically all it is, is opening up for outfitters to rent tubes, kayaks and stand up paddle boards."
Trista Northern Manager of Trophy Outfitters located along the four mile stretch sees this as good for business saying, "I absolutely think that once kayaks are allowed that it would pick up."
The rule changes also further define requirements on acceptable life jackets, but Lieutenant Dennis Feazell says, "As long as their old life jacket is still serviceable, and by serviceable I mean that the straps are still in good shape. It fits them. It doesn’t have holes in it. It floats. It’s still going to be legal."
You can get your comments in to the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources until 5 PM on July 26th.
