CHARMCO, WV (WVVA) A candlelight service for Chad Ramsey was moved inside Greenbrier West High School due to rain, but that didn’t stop community members from showing up.\

The memory of a Greenbrier West athlete was honored Thursday night. Community members gathered to remember Chad Ramsey, the 18-year-old who died on Sunday from injuries sustained in an ATV crash.

“On Sunday evening we got news that he had passed and in about three hours that gym was about half full,” said Chad’s baseball coach Doug Nickell.

Thursday night, the gymnasium was full again to share memories of the football and baseball star.

Chad’s teammate since little league days Cody Lewis said, “So close to graduation and knowing that he didn’t get the chance to walk across the stage with us, it’s hard on every single one of us even if you didn’t have a relationship with him.”

Shane Griffith played baseball with Chad. Griffith remembered Chad saying, “Playing baseball my freshman year and being in the dugout, Chad was always just yelling and hollering and he’s just always fun to be around, always had a smile on his face.”

Even with fond memories to share, those that knew Chad expect the grief to linger. Coach Nickell said, “When we start baseball practice I’m sure Chad Ramsey’s name will be mentioned several times and, you know, we’ll be prepared for that because we might have to pause practice and just sit around and cry for a bit longer.”

The official memorial service for Chad is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 25 at Greenbrier West’s John C. Estep Gymnasium. The funeral service will take place at 2 p.m., followed by a burial at the family’s residence.
