(NBC NEWS) A methane explosion at a state-run coal mine in the Czech Republic killed 13 miners Friday.
The blast, about a half-mile underground, devastated large areas of mine according to the mine operator. Eleven Poles were killed along with two Czechs. Ten more miners were hurt in the blast.
Prime ministers from both countries visited the mine.
A member of the Czech mining authority said the level of methane in the mine was four and a half times over the limit.
Rescue teams are still trying to recover victims’ bodies but it’s tough going because fires are still burning underground.
