(Lewisburg) Today Greenbrier County schools rehearsed for the worst=. 800 school employees went through active shooter training.
The smell of gun powder fills the air. Law enforcement moves in.
Today a different type of learning is taking place. It’s a simulation of an active shooter here at Greenbrier East High School. Teachers hide in classrooms as a pretend shooter fires blanks.
Robert Workman West Virginia State Police Sgt. & FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force said, “We use the module on run, hide and fight. And that’s what you’ll see in our training today. That’s been shown as the best response for an active shooter event.”
Officers prepared teachers by playing 911 calls from Columbine. Back then the strategy was to hide under tables. Now Greenbrier County schools hope to be more prepared with a special app that allows teachers to quickly contact 911.
Sheriff Bruce Sloan of the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department explains, “They can actually initiate the alert that goes directly to law enforcement’s cellular phone. They get a text message.”
But how prepared can a school ever be?
Jeff Bryant the Greenbrier County School Superintendent said, “Those are the things that keep you up at night.”
