PRINCETON, WV (WVVA) The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute has visited 27 schools over the past year. Wednesday, they went to Princeton High School.

There are several things young drivers should be weary of when hitting the road. With major road systems like I-77 and I-81, dealing with semi-trucks is a common occurrence.

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute helps the young drivers understand what semi-truck drivers see and more importantly, what they can’t see.

“We found that only about half the states require that they teach anything relating to safely sharing the road with trucks and buses. So from that point, we put together the in-class presentation, this hands-on demonstration where they all get to sit in the driver’s seat of the truck, and we got funding from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and we have now been doing this for the past year,” said Scott Tidwell, Field Researcher for the Virginia Tech Transportation Institution.

Tidwell says they’ve received positive feedback and hope to extend their services to high schools in North Carolina and other nearby states in the future.
