Law enforcement in Cumberland County are investigating a shooting that has claimed the life of Virginia state trooper.
Trooper Lucas B. Dowell, 28, was shot Monday night while assisting the Piedmont Regional Drug and Gang Task Force with the search of a home near Farmville. Dowell, a member of the VSP tactical team, was injured when the team made entry into the home. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect inside.
Trooper Dowell was taken to Southside Community Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect was later identified as Corey Johnson, 44, of Cumberland County, Virginia. Johnson was a suspect in an ongoing narcotics investigation, according to to VSP spokesperson Corinne Geller.
Trooper Dowell was native of Chilhowie, Virginia and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Radford University. He began serving as state trooper in November 2014 in the Appomattox Division. Trooper Dowell became a member of the tactical team in 2015. He is survived by his parents and a sister.
No other officers were hurt in shooting.
“In accordance with Virginia State Police policy, the two troopers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave,” stated Geller.
Funeral services for Trooper Dowell are incomplete at this time.
