Magic Mart to close all stores by Sunday

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) After more than a hundred years in the department store business, Magic Mart stores across the region will be closing their doors for the final time on Sunday.

In July, the retailer announced it would be closing all stores by October.  Since that announcement, customers have been shopping by the hundreds in search of bargains in the liquidation sale.

“I couldn’t believe it. I said they just moved into the building and now they are closing. I’m sad for the employees,” said Neda Adkins, a shopper at the Beckley store on Wednesday.

As the last remaining customers trickled into the Beckley store on Wednesday, many were not ready just yet to make the move to a megastore.

“When I go to Walmart, I can’t find nobody to help me. I don’t like having to check out my own stuff. I’m not up on that. It’s just taking jobs,” said another shopper Lou Adkins.

There is very little left in the Magic Mart in Beckley, but more than a hundred years of memories and employees whose friendly faces many know by name. While some came for the last remaining items, others were there to simply say goodbye.

“I’m really going to miss them it’s sad. There will be tears on the last day. That’s why I wanted to come out here and tell everyone goodbye and wish them the best of luck,” said Adkins.

Magic Mart’s President K.A. Ammar said stores in Welch, Hazard, Ky, Hurricane, WV, Pulaski, Va, and Richlands, Va. have already closed.
