Southwest Virginia Municipal Leaders pledge to support planned Children’s Advocacy Center

Law enforcement, legal counsel, mental health staff, and social workers gathered today in Tazewell County to sign a Memorandum of Understanding for a Children’s Advocacy Center planned to serve Tazewell, Russell, and Buchanan Counties. The Memorandum serves as a pledge to support the planned center, known as the CARE Center.

The event in Tazewell represented Tazewell and Buchanan County officials signing the Memorandum. Russell County officials had signed the document at an earlier morning event.

The objective of the center is to offer a safe haven for physically and sexually abused children, and to offer a place for law enforcement, legal counsel, and mental health professionals to converge to make helping abused children easier.

The center will be located in an old parsonage house at First United Methodist in Richlands, VA, which is currently being renovated. It is projected to open within the next few months.

CARE Center Executive Director April Morefield tells WVVA News, “It’s where a child can tell their story of victimization of sexual or physical abuse”.

The event featured multiple speakers including representatives of the Elgin Foundation, who has committed $200,000 for the project.
