State Auditor encouraging new website, showing spending and revenue numbers for County

The State Auditor wants the Mercer County Commissioners to consider using a new website that will show all spending activities in the County.

John McCuskey, State Auditor for West Virginia, is encouraging all 55 counties to use the website http://Westvirginiacheck-book.gov.

The site will show all spending and revenue for each County, allowing residents to see how dollars are being utilized in real time.

Residents can search from over 600 million rows of spending lines and see first hand the costs.

As of now, two counties are using the website, Monongalia County and Berkeley County.

One example John McCuskey used to demonstrate how the website works, was looking up spending on construction projects.

“Any citizen in West Virginia can go on the website and see how every bit of their tax dollars are being spent,” said McCuskey. “For example, we typed in paving in the search box, which works just like Google. We’re able to see every spending line that had the word paving in it.”

McCuskey says the site is all about transparency, so residents can see what’s going on with spending.
The Mercer County Commissioners might discuss this website again, in a future meeting.
