BOONE COUNTY, WV (WVA) Mine safety officials have mobilized efforts to locate a missing man thought to be inside an abandoned Boone County mine.

According to Samantha Smith with the West Virginia Department of Commerce, a team of three rescuers have started looking for the missing man in an abandoned Blackhawk underground mine near Wharton, WV.

Conditions inside the mine, which closed in 1998, are unknown.

“When operations cease and a mine is sealed, conditions can deteriorate very quickly,” said Eugene White, Director of Mine, Health, Safety, and Training. “Roof falls, toxic levels of gas, flooding and other dangers may exist. We will take every measure possible to ensure the safety of the rescuers entering the mine.”

The decision was made to enter the mine after efforts by law enforcement to find the man above ground were exhausted.
