Summers County man charged with sexual abuse of child

HINTON, WV (WVVA) A Summers County man has entered a not guilty plea to sexual abuse charges.

Charles Edward Ratliff, 62, of Jumping Branch was arraigned in front of Circuit Court Judge Robert Irons on Friday. He faces a 20-count indictment (ten counts of first degree sexual assault and ten counts of first degree sexual abuse by a parent, guardian or person of trust). It is common for defendants to enter a not guilty plea during their initial circuit court appearance.

According to Prosecuting Attorney Kristen Cook, Ratliff waived his right to a speedy trial. His next hearing is scheduled for February 25. Ratliff is free on a $220,000 surety bond.

Senior Trooper N.C. Boothe out of the Hinton detachment of the West Virginia State Police handled the investigation with assistance from the Summers County Child Advocacy Center.
