There seems to be days dubbed for everything. National Cat Day, National Cookie Day, even National Fruitcake Day.
Did you know that January 7th is referred to as Divorce Day?
According to an online BBC article, the first working Monday of the year is the day when the largest number of couples around the globe begin initiating separation and divorce procedures.
The holiday season may be stressful with all the family gatherings and gift giving. For some, it may be a time when families notice they’re not happy during the happiest time of year.
Director of Life Strategies Counseling in Beckley, Hamlet Smith says, “I don’t know about your family, but we spend a lot of money in December. So, January is when the bills come in, so it’s very stressful. It’s stressful to be married. It’s stressful to have kids. It’s stressful all the way around, but you start realizing that in January.”
The BBC article says one in ten couples split due to money issues.
Mr. Smith’s biggest piece of advice is to talk through it. “The biggest mistake you can make is making a quick decision. Talk to the people who love you. Talk to your pastor. Talk to Aunt Elma. Talk to whoever you need to talk to. Go to marriage counseling. Those are good options to make sure this is really what you want to do.”
