GREENBRIER COUNTY, WV (WVVA) A teacher at Greenbrier East High School has been arrested, according to Sheriff Sloan.

Susan Surber of White Sulphur Springs is charged with illegal distribution of controlled substances.

Information asserted that Surber traded her legally obtained prescription medication for marijuana and solicited the assistance of a student to obtain marijuana. At this time there is no indication that a drug deal took place on school premises.

Surber was arrested Monday on one count of Delivery of a Controlled Substance and arraigned before Greenbrier County Magistrate Brenda Smith. She was subsequently released on bond.

Greenbrier County School Superintendent Jeff Bryant released the following statement after learning of Surber’s arrest:

Administration is aware of the recent arrest of a classroom teacher and the serious allegations asserted against the employee. However, personnel laws that govern school employees prevent the school system from addressing the status of the employee other than to state that the employee is not currently in the classroom and will not be returning to the classroom.  To respond further could compromise the employee’s due process rights in the event adverse action is taken.  We trust the press, parents and public understand our limitations in this regard.

At this initial stage in the process, administration will continue to cooperate with law enforcement and will continue to monitor the criminal proceedings, all while complying with the legal requirements that must be afforded to the employee.  We appreciate the cooperative working relationship with local law enforcement, and their efforts in protecting our students. The school system will not take any action that could jeopardize or interfere with law enforcement’s process.

As Superintendent, I will say that I expect, as do the Board of Education members, that all employees are expected to exhibit professional behavior.  All employees are expected to maintain a safe and healthy environment. All employees are expected to demonstrate responsible citizenship by maintaining a high standard of conduct, self-control, and moral/ethical behavior. Anything less is not and will not be acceptable.
