(WVVA) West Virginia Governor Jim Justice will deliver his third State of the State Address Wednesday night.
The speech will take place at 7 p.m. inside the House of Delegates chamber. You can watch the address LIVE on WVVA-TV or https://wvva.com/watch-wvva-live/ .
Gov. Justice announced plans to seek reelection in 2020 earlier this week. He also reported another big general revenue surplus ($44.8 million) for the month of December, adding to a total surplus of $185.9 million since July.
“These numbers are unbelievable,” said Gov. Justice. “I think the best way to qualify this is that we have the biggest surplus in history for our state for the first six months of a fiscal year.”
Lawmakers expect Justice to a discus the topic of teacher pay and how to fully fund PEIA (Public Employee Insurance Agency). Teachers at one middle school in Kanawha County held a walk-in ahead of the Legislative session to bring attention to what they called “The State of Schools.”
“We saw a raise and they’re still working on our health insurance, which we’re really happy about,” said teacher Jay O’Neal. “But now we want to make sure the focus is on our students that they’re getting the services they need. We feel like right now they’re not getting enough, and they need more.”
We can also expect Gov. Justice to give us an update on his $2.8 billion highway improvement plan. Nearly 300 projects covering 700 miles had been completed by October.
Meanwhile, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam will deliver the State of our Commonwealth Address Wednesday night in Richmond. It will be broadcast LIVE on the Two Virginias’ CW starting at 7 p.m.
