(WVVA) Democrat Richard Ojeda has officially resigned from the West Virginia Senate.

In a letter sent to Senate President Mitch Carmichael, the retired Army paratrooper stated “it would be unfair to leave this seat empty, with no voice for my district as I pursue my charted course.”

Ojeda was elected to the state senate in 2016. He also won the Democratic primary for West Virginia’s 3rd congressional district in 2018, but lost in the general election to Republican Carol Miller. Ojeda has since filed paperwork as a candidate for the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
