Trooper Lucas B. Dowell was killed in the line of duty on Monday during a drug investigation in Farmville, VA.

The funeral service is being held at the Chilhowie Christian Church in Chilhowie, VA.

Trooper Lucas B. Dowell, 28, was shot Monday night while assisting the Piedmont Regional Drug and Gang Task Force with the search of a home near Farmville.  Dowell, a member of the VSP tactical team, was injured when the team made entry into the home. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect inside.

Trooper Dowell was native of Chilhowie, Virginia and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Radford University. He began serving as state trooper in November 2014 in the Appomattox Division. Trooper Dowell became a member of the tactical team in 2015. He is survived by his parents and a sister.
