Man sentenced in tragic crash resulting in four deaths, Mercer County

MERCER COUNTY, WV (WVVA) A man was sentenced Thursday for a 2017 traffic crash that caused the deaths of four family members.

Bertram Copeland, of Rockford, Illinois was found guilty of four counts of negligent homicide and one count of reckless driving. Mercer County Magistrate Sandra Dorsey sentenced him to four consecutive years in jail.

On April 13, 2017 Copeland’s tractor-trailer was traveling southbound on Interstate 77 near Camp Creek when it crossed the medium, hitting a passenger vehicle. David and Christine Gilley of Salisbury, NC and their two children Jack and Grace were killed in collision.

Copeland’s trial occurred last week. Magistrate Dorsey allowed the victims’ family to give statements before delivering the sentence. One family members told Magistrate Dorsey she didn’t feel any hate, bitterness or unforgiveness in her heart.
