Springing into trail season

The fast paced thrill of ATV trail riding makes the Original Pocahontas Trail one of the top three tourist attractions in Tazewell County. It’s one of five trail systems in the Spearhead Trails, making up over 450 miles of rough riding terrain.

According to Tazewell County Tourism, it attracts people from around the world and it gains popularity every year.

“Spearhead has a lot of people. A lot of locals that are really getting on board and starting to ride the trails. But the biggest, and I would say 60-70% at the low end, are from out of town because what’s happening now. Families are starting to do this instead of going to the beach, instead of going to other places. They’re going out to the outdoors,” said Chris Sturgill, Spearhead Trails Engineer.

Business owners in the industry say they’re excited for the atmosphere that the busier seasons provide.

For the Real McCoy Cabins, it’s all a locally run effort.

“Our cabins were all built by a local contractor. All of our people are local that we hire. Everything that has been done here, including this store, was done by someone who went to school in Pocahontas. We try to keep it as local as we can,” said co-owner Don Cates.
