WYTHE COUNTY, VA (WVVA) A suspect injured during an officer-involved shooting in Wytheville has died.

William R. Clark, 31, of Pulaski, VA died Friday morning at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Clark was accused of firing a gun at a Virginia state trooper during a high-speed chase.

According to the Virginia State Police, the incident began at 1:40 a.m. on Thursday when a VSP trooper traveling south on Interstate 81 in Pulaski County located a Dodge pickup that was reported stolen. The driver (Clark) of the pickup refused to stop. During the pursuit, investigators said Clark “fired several shots at the state trooper’s vehicle.” The trooper was not hurt and eventually lost sight of the vehicle in Wytheville, VA.

The Dodge pickup was found 30 minutes later abandoned on Barrett Mill Road. At that point, K-9 units were called in to look for the suspect.

Then at 3:45 a.m., a police officer in Wytheville stopped a “suspicious vehicle” on West Railroad Avenue. The driver, later identified as Charity F. Barton, 39, was apparently looking for Clark. Troopers discovered methamphetamine and a semi-automatic rifle in her vehicle.

A firearm was recovered from the stolen truck.

Barton was arrested on the following charges:

• 1 count of possession of a Schedule I/II drug
• 1 count of possession of a Schedule I/II drug with the intent to distribute
• 1 count of possession of a concealed weapon
• 1 count of possession of a stolen firearm
• 1 count of possession of a firearm while in possession of a Schedule I/II drug
• 1 count of possession of a stolen license plate

Barton was taken to New River Valley Regional Jail.

The trooper involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave.
