MABSCOTT, W.Va. (WVVA) It’s one of the biggest dilemmas facings teachers and parents today. How do you prepare children for the age of technology while at the same time preventing them from overusing it?

Mabscott Elementary 5th graders worked to answer that question as part of their graduation project in May. They made a Youtube video of kids in a zombie-like state, unable to look up from their phone as a young girl asked to play.

Teacher Crystal Yost hopes the project will encourage her students to find balance as they head into middle school.

“We’re not trying to say technology shouldn’t be in school. Technology is a wonderful resource for school…it’s the overuse of it. For example, instead of playing a game they could be making an I-movie.”

Yost said the idea for the project came to her one day when the kids were reluctant to play outside and instead wanted to play on their I-Pads.

While the students came up with the story line and concept, they were aided by Beckley video production business Kid in the Background.
